Built between 1698 and 1702 by the Prince of Wallachia, Constantin Br\u00e2ncoveanu, Mogo\u0219oaia Palace is located approximately 15 km from Bucharest, in Mogo\u0219oaia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a place full of history of over 300 years, of a special charm, due to a vast domain, with gardens that go down to the lake and of the Romanian Renaissance architectural style that can be named after the ruler, the Br\u00e2ncoveanu style. This architectural style is a combination of Venetian elements with Ottoman elements, which are also found in another palace of the ruler previously built, in Potlogi, D\u00e2mbovi\u021ba County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name Mogo\u0219oaia comes from the name of the widow of the boyar Mogo\u0219, in whose possession was the land that Prince Constantin Br\u00e2ncoveanu buys and where he then builds this Palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The buildings of the Br\u00e2ncoveanu complex are: the Palace, the Br\u00e2ncoveanu cuhnia (kitchen), the gate tower, the guest house (Vila Elchingen), the greenhouses, the glacier, the Bibescu family chapel, as well as the church dedicated to Saint George located outside, next to the courtyard walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the execution of Constantin Br\u00e2ncoveanu and his four sons, in Constantinople in 1714, his entire fortune was confiscated by the Ottomans, and the Mogo\u0219oaia Palace was transformed into an inn. Redeemed from the Ottomans by \u0218tefan Cantacuzino, the new ruler of Wallachia, Mogo\u0219oaia Palace then reverts to the Grand Ban (governor) Constantin Br\u00e2ncoveanu, the nephew of the ruler Constantin Br\u00e2ncoveanu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the 5th Russo-Turkish War (1768-1774), the Mogo\u0219oaia Palace was devastated by the Ottomans, because the Grand Ban Nicolae Br\u00e2ncoveanu had sided with the Russians in the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rebuilt, the Mogo\u0219oaia Palace is part of a new destruction during the Revolution of 1821, when the last descendant of the Br\u00e2ncoveanu family, Grigore, fled to Bra\u0219ov, and the Palace was occupied by the revolutionary pandurs. In 1832, after Grigore\u2019s death, the property of Mogo\u0219oaia Palace remained the inheritance of his adopted daughter Zoe Mavrocordat, who, being married to Prince Gheorghe Bibescu, in 1826, thus became the property of his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The palace was renovated again between 1860 and 1880 by Nicolae Bibescu, who also built the family chapel in the Palace Park, as well as the nearby Elchingen Villa. The palace was still managed by the Bibescu family who will move to the new villa, and the old building remained uninhabited. In 1911, the Palace was sold to George-Valentin Bibescu, who gave it as a wedding gift to his wife Martha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martha Bibescu has been renovating and decorating the Palace since 1912. During the First World War, the renovation work stagnated and the building suffered further damage as a result of German bombing. The works were resumed in 1920, Martha Bibescu spending a large part of the fortune gathered from the books she wrote. The palace was reopened in 1927, with some work continuing until 1935.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While owned by Martha Bibescu, the Palace was visited by personalities such as King Carol I of Romania, King Ferdinand of Romania and his wife Queen Maria of Romania, King Alfonso XIII of Spain, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, Nicolae Iorga, Marcel Proust or August Von Mackensen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the communist government was established on March 6, 1945, the domain was nationalized, but Martha Bibescu obtained from the authorities the declaration of the Palace as a historical monument, which remained in her possession. Martha Bibescu left Romania for good in September 1945, leaving her daughter\u2019s Palace. In 1949, Mogo\u0219oaia Palace was also nationalized, and her daughter and husband were arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1967, Mogo\u0219oaia Palace became the headquarters of the feudal section of the National Museum of Art. Today, here is the Br\u00e2ncoveenu Art Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Palace, the main building of the Mogo\u0219oaia complex, was built by Constantin Br\u00e2ncoveanu, with the apartments of the ruler\u2019s family on the first floor, which can be reached directly from the courtyard on an external staircase leading to a balcony located on the facade. The ground floor of the palace contains the servants\u2019 rooms, and in the basement there is a cellar with a ceiling consisting of four domes. The lake-facing fa\u00e7ade of the palace is a separate one, with a Venetian-inspired lodge with three arches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Br\u00e2ncoveanu Cuhnia is located in the courtyard of the palace, with four ventilation towers. Today there is an exhibition space here. The gate tower guards the entrance to the courtyard. In the tower can go up on an external staircase. Both the gate tower and the cuhnia were restored by Martha Bibescu between 1922 and 1930.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guest house was built by Nicolae Bibescu between 1860-1880, and was originally called Villa Elchinghen. During the communist era, the Writers\u2019 Union House of Creation was here, and now houses a conference center with two rooms, a restaurant, and several accommodations. The guest house harmonizes with the whole complex, being also built in Brancoveanu architectural style and using the same type of materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mogo\u0219oaia greenhouses were built after 1890. Recently rebuilt, the greenhouses are again used for flower cultivation and as a plastic education workshop for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The glacier was used to store the ice cut from Lake Mogo\u0219oaia during the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chapel built after 1880 is a family necropolis that houses the graves of the last owners and their relatives. Prince Nicolae Bibescu and his wife Louise Ney d\u2019Elchingen, Prince George Bibescu and his wife, Princess Elisabeth Bibescu, Princes Mihai Barasab Br\u00e2ncoveanul and George Basarab Br\u00e2ncoveanu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church dedicated to Saint George built by Constantin Br\u00e2ncoveanu in 1688, where the votive painting depicts Prince Constantin Br\u00e2ncoveanu, his wife Lady Maria (Marica) Br\u00e2ncoveanu, together with his four sons and six from daughters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
